Fire at former House of Fraser store

Monday, November 17, 2008, 08:46

A security guard raised the alarm and stopped a blaze ripping through the former House of Fraser building in Broadmead early today.

A fire broke out in an area between the first and second floors of the former department store in Horsefair at just after 4.30am. An on-duty security guard spotted the blaze and dialled 999.

Fire crews quickly put out the fire and later praised the security guard, saying his vigilance had prevented the fire spreading to the rest of the building and causing major damage.

A spokeswoman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze started accidentally as a result of work carried out by contractors yesterday.

House of Fraser moved out of the building in September and relocated to its 17,000 sq ft flagship store at Cabot Circus.

Primark took over the building on October 1 and will transform it into a new store next year.
